SolarWinds, the three biggest challenges of hybrid IT

SolarWinds, the three biggest challenges of hybrid IT

By Kong Yang, SolarWinds Head Geek ™
Cloud computing and the strategic use of hybrid IT to stimulate innovation are bringing changes in organizations of all sizes and formats. Although end users may not be aware of this, you, the IT professional, are probably going through a new era of demand-driven work – an era when your organization is leveraging cloud services and hybrid IT to become more Innovative, economical, agile and interconnected than ever before.
The newly published SolarWinds IT Trend Report for 2017: A portrait of a hybrid IT organization has revealed some of the key challenges that hybrid IT environments present to Brazilian IT professionals. This article explains why these challenges exist and how to overcome them.
Increased infrastructure complexity
According to the survey, 64 percent of IT professionals at large, medium and small companies agree that hybrid IT introduces greater infrastructure complexities into their day-to-day responsibilities. The continuous change of the cloud in terms of volume, speed and variety of services brings the promise of innovation, but also brings new levels of responsibility.
This is transforming the roles and responsibilities of IT professionals in everyday life. The volume and speed of new cloud services and technologies are enabling a variety of options, which in turn brings greater responsibility. For example, you can provision an on-premise solution and deliver email via Exchange ™, or you can consume it as a Microsoft® cloud service via Microsoft Office 365® Business Premium, Google® via G Suite ™, and even the fresh – Announced productivity suite for Amazon office, among others.
Today, the burden of managing all changes and integrating them seamlessly rests with IT professionals. IT is responsible for data in your organizations, from multiple devices with different operating systems, to application stacks, different delivery mechanisms, consumption patterns, and so on. These elements begin to resemble a multi-variable equation of calculation in which services, suppliers, processes, technology, and personnel may change over time. However, regardless of the size or industry of the organization, hybrid IT presents the opportunity to realize the value of what can be categorized as innovation in your revenue-generating applications – in other words, intellectual property.
To address the demand for innovation, while managing the increase in complexity, IT professionals must predict future migration to remain flexible. Hybrid IT deployments take different forms and shapes in different organizations. Every organizational environment is unique. In the future, IT departments should create processes for proof-of-concept and migration that illustrate ROI, or lack thereof, to their business leadership team. This includes an understanding of how to achieve stack-wide visibility with hybrid IT monitoring tools, establishing migration protocols and application quality / reliability testing, and learning about cost-effective models and data planning.
Cloud-based infrastructure performance and control visibility
In addition to addressing the complexity of cloud infrastructure services, there are also visibility and control issues that must be addressed. One surprising finding, however, is that 48% of IT professionals interviewed feel they need the control and visibility they need to succeed in their projects. IT professionals must work in tune with managers to ensure and implement a comprehensive toolset to gain control and visibility across the entire hybrid IT infrastructure.
Without a comprehensive set of tools, it is difficult for the IT professional to maintain control and satisfactorily meet the compliance and governance needs of your organization, as well as delivering the quality of service (QoS) required to meet service level agreements. In other words, the only way to achieve these goals is to have visibility across the entire stack of applications, from infrastructure services that support the application layer to networks that connect an organization’s secret formula to its clients. This applies especially to end-users who are experiencing performance problems on the local or mobile network.
Also, there is often the misconception that visibility in the cloud is only needed once your business reaches a certain size. However, the reality is that if there are infrastructure services in the cloud, any organization – be it a small or medium-sized enterprise or a Global 100 company with a fully integrated DevOps strategy – must be able to ensure centralized visibility of the environments On the spot and in the cloud. Workloads are increasingly distributed between the site and the cloud in different geographic locations. Faced with the exponential pace of changes in business technology, it is essential to have the ability to unleash a single point of truth on all these platforms. The ability to consolidate and correlate time series data to provide more breadth,
Gap of IT Team Skills
The third biggest challenge associated with hybrid IT environments is that 43% of all IT professionals recognize the existence of a skill gap in the industry – aggravating increased infrastructure complexity and lack of visibility. Traditionally, certifications from Cisco®, Oracle®, Microsoft®, or VMware® have proven that you were able to juggle vendor-specific solutions to any problems in those environments. However, in the world of hybrid IT, where volume, speed, and variety prevail, it becomes increasingly difficult to specialize in the various workable solutions available. There lies the skills gap, which will be present wherever you work.
Despite this, there remains a need to deliver solutions anywhere, anytime for the right price. Different providers may offer services of a similar nature but with different names and specifications, and it is up to you to standardize these experiences and put them into practice. For example, if you are working in tiered applications for an e-commerce transactional site, you can either create a fully local multi-tiered project or you can opt for hybrid IT and migrate the application and web services to the cloud while maintaining Customer data in place.
As time goes by and more services and options become available, it will be more important than ever to prepare your work for the cloud. With the continued convergence of traditional silo-based IT functions, focus on cultivating key skill sets that drive you to the cloud, such as hybrid IT monitoring / management tools, distributed application architecture, automation, and data analysis. Inquire in the communities of colleagues to better understand and put into practice more quickly the various variants and technological abstractions, such as software-defined constructs, containers, microservices and serverless architecture. Finally, establish monitoring as a basic IT function, also known as monitoring as a discipline,
summary
The bottom line is that as an IT professional, you need to arm yourself with a new set of skills, tools and resources to succeed as the hybrid IT era continues to evolve. And while cloud challenges still persist in the near future, organizations must develop future integration plans, ensure centralized visibility across all environments, and actively work to help IT professionals bridge the skills gap.

SQL Diagnostic Manager Enterprise view of all your SQL Servers

One of the challenges when managing SQL Server is that you probably have several instances that need to be monitored.  Just connecting to each instance and going through the same motions over and over again is time consuming.  So having a global view of your environment is a major time saver and with SQL Diagnostic Manager you have a couple of global views to see your entire SQL Server enterprise all at once.
The first screen is the SQLdm Today screen as shown below.  This screen gives you a status summary for all of your servers, so you can drilldown into each server to address any issues.  In the image below, on the left side we have a summary listing of our servers and whether they have issues that need to be addressed.  On the right side we can see a list of alerts that need to be addressed for all of our servers.  This is a quick way to get a To Do list of items that need to be addressed for all SQL Server instances instead of having to check instance by instance.
IDERA Releases SQL Secure and SQL Doctor Cloud Updates

IDERA Releases SQL Secure and SQL Doctor Cloud Updates

Latest database tool enhancements bridge the gap between DBA and DevOps teams
HOUSTON–(BUSINESS WIRE)–IDERA, a leading provider of database lifecycle management solutions, today released major updates to its flagship SQL Secure and SQL Doctorproducts to include new cloud capabilities. These releases allow data professionals to adapt to, experiment with and take advantage of expanding cloud strategies, and helps DBAs embrace the speed and agility demands of DevOps with database performance and security recommendations designed for the public cloud.
“THE CONTINUED GROWTH IN HYBRID CLOUD ENVIRONMENTS INCREASES THE LIKELIHOOD OF DATA BREACHES, WHICH IS ONE OF THE TRADEOFFS FOR REALIZING THE BENEFITS OF THE PUBLIC CLOUD”
With the latest versions of SQL Secure and SQL Doctor, database administrators (DBAs) can now see on-premise and public cloud-based databases in a single-pane console. They also receive cloud-specific recommendations to improve the performance, health and security of public cloud databases to ensure they are just as secure as those on-premise. Both SQL Secure and SQL Doctor target SQL Server on-premise and in Azure VM as well as Azure SQL Database. SQL Doctor also targets SQL Server in Amazon EC2 and Amazon RDS SQL Server.
“The continued growth in hybrid cloud environments increases the likelihood of data breaches, which is one of the tradeoffs for realizing the benefits of the public cloud,” said Robert Anderson, vice president of product management at IDERA. “It’s imperative that organizations have policies and tools in place that can detect when sensitive data is at risk. IDERA gives users the confidence to move databases to the cloud by connecting the dots between traditional DBA operations and modern DevOps teams, while helping them improve the performance and security of cloud databases with tools they know and trust.”
While other products provide basic performance and availability monitoring of cloud databases, SQL Doctor now inspects cloud and on-premises databases for common health concerns, providing detailed recommendations and script actions to resolve problems and optimize performance. SQL Doctor also directly manages cloud database as a service (that is, Amazon RDS SQL Server and Azure SQL Database), resulting in superior visibility and performance.
The latest version of SQL Secure now extends product functionality from on-premises databases to databases in the cloud, giving DBAs a comprehensive, automated solution for analyzing, monitoring and reporting on security concerns for SQL Server and Azure SQL Databases. SQL Secure verifies on-premises and cloud databases against security best practices from a single console, allowing companies to move workloads to the cloud without fear of a debilitating security breach.

Brazil is the country where Salesforce most grew in the world

Brazil is the country where Salesforce most grew in the world

The Brazilian operation of Salesforce was the one that grew the most last year compared to all other countries, even with Brazil going through economic and political crises, revealed the president of the Brazilian subsidiary, Mauricio Prado. For him, the crisis created an accelerator for the company’s business here, as companies prioritized improving interaction with their customers.
Worldwide, the company, founded in 1999 and one of the pioneers in delivering software in the cloud, plans to double in size over the next three years, reaching $ 20 billion in revenue. The company closed fiscal year 2017, ending January 31 this year with $ 8.39 billion and expects to reach $ 10 billion in the next period.
The backdrop to optimistic growth projection is the fourth industrial revolution, Which aggregates technologies such as cloud computing, media and social networks, mobility, internet of things and artificial intelligence. “The consumer has brutal power in the hands and this creates a huge challenge for companies,” he said during his presentation at the opening of the Salesforce World Tour, held on Wednesday 17/5 in São Paulo.
In the age when customer experience prevails, Salesforce is betting that changing the customer relationship system (CRM), in order to have a single view and with all the integrated channels, is the basis of the Transformation of enterprises. “We are the protagonists of digital transformation and in many cases we have led this movement in some industries,” Prado said.
In this sense, Eduardo Campos, Vice president of solutions engineering at Salesforce, said five business software transformations: intelligence, speed, productivity, mobility, and connectivity. Smarter CRM relies on artificial intelligence and the future of productivity includes conversational documents, mobility, e-mail collaboration, and online and offline teamwork, the VP explained.
Overcoming crises
The years of crises have boosted Salesforce’s business, company CEO Mauricio Prado said. He explained that between 2008 and 2009, that is, period of the global financial crisis, the company has changed in size, increasing in size. “Companies need to do better and faster,” he says.
In Brazil, Salesforce has been with a local office for three years – before it was only via partners or customers who were directly involved in the company in the United States. In calendar year 2016, the subsidiary recorded the highest growth among all of the company’s worldwide operations. “Companies are thinking about how to sell more with less resources and how to get more out of the resources they have, and every time they interact with customers, they need to be more accurate,” Prado explained.
The Brazilian operation is expected to surpass the 2016 numbers in calendar year 2017 (fiscal 2018). “The economic moment is better and the digital transformation is on the agenda of companies,” says Prado. Criteria for an appropriate API Manager solution

Criteria for an appropriate API Manager solution

I have come across various evaluation processes for API Manager solutions and one thing that draws attention is that few companies have a defined evaluation criteria.
Having defined requirements eliminates much of the complexity of the decision process: internal meetings, meetings with suppliers, POCs, etc.
As an example, I can cite a basic and important question, since I know that many banks, government, health and insurance companies, because they treat sensitive information, prefer on-premise solutions: that is, the solution that We are willing to evolve, can it be in the cloud?
Such a criterion already eliminates several solutions and consequently saves your team time. Still in the line of the basic questions it is important to compare components properly, as we speak in the banana market “compare bananas with bananas”. Given the various technologies available, when we talk about API, we have API Gateways and API Manager Suites.
In short, an API Gateway will perform the Proxy on an existing service, often this proxy does not have basic capabilities like: convert SOAP-XML to JSON / vice versa. As for the API Manager Suite, it is expected to have some more features, among them: API publishing tools in a Portal, security arsenal (SAML, Oauth, Tokens, JWT, etc.), store customization (Market Places) Of APIs, themes / visual identity, registry workflow in an API, governance, versioning, customization of proxies mediation, etc.
In this paper on the WSO2 website you can get an idea of how to evaluate a solution. I know there seems to be a pull to the side of the WSO2, however I have evaluated the material and there are super interesting points that can be used as support for who is determining the criteria.
Recently we answered some criteria for a client, I use to leave a picture of these items as an example:
API
I found the OpenSource criterion very interesting as a decision factor, because in addition to extensibility, for security reasons they can perform audits on how transactions are performed, among other important factors.
But as everyone knows, WSO2 is not the only Open Source API Manager solution, however it has the advantage of an extensive number of users and fans as well as people testing and helping improve the product. For example, I find the material below very interesting:
api
If you try to sign in to one of these APIs, an approval workflow will be triggered for my email, this workflow is important, not only to know the user, but for example, register it in a financial system for billing, or activate other resources etc.
Another important point, in the past, in another company that I worked on, many times when we were going to respond to an RFI from a client, because it was an open source project / product, a lot of features, we were left with WSO2 API Manager, It makes us world-class and first-class, and with the advantages of price, performance, flexibility and so on. For this reason, in the vast majority of competitions that we enter, we always have great confidence, that from the product point of view, we will have great chances of satisfying our customers, for example and some customers in the world and Latin America (about 70 customers In the World of API Management only).
If you are looking for a solution, I strongly recommend taking a look at the WSO2 API Manager. Not because I’m an employee of WSO2, but because it’s really a very complete solution and an interesting support model.

In times of crisis and tight budgets companies of all sizes, and even startups, look for efficient ways to meet their hosting needs.
With the arrival of cloud computing, a new possibility of hosting was born, unlike the traditional hosting model that the market knew as hosting.
Although the cloud is no longer new, some professionals still confuse both hosting services. So in this post, we will explain the main differences between them.
Hosting or traditional hosting
We know hosting or traditional hosting as a way to offer unique features in an environment that hosts applications, IT solutions or assets, where the responsibility of managing maintenance tasks and keeping everything running is the role of the company that offers this type of hosting.
For this, the company that provides hosting services provides the infrastructure, such as the data center to store your customer data protecting, replicating and ensuring the security of these applications. There are two forms of hosting, dedicated hosting or shared hosting.
Dedicated Hosting:
In this model a company pays the full resources of one or more servers of a service provider. The clienthas a set amount of dedicated bandwidth, CPU, RAM, and space on the drive and has full control over the resources of the servers.
Shared Hosting:
Shared hosting, as its name implies, pays you for a set amount of storage on a single server, and the resources on that server are shared, being the responsibility of the management, maintenance and updating of the hosting company.
This hosting model is common among small and medium-sized businesses, as it is an economical and low-maintenance model for hosting for example a website or applications.
Hosting Features
In the traditional hosting model, mainly the shared one, the resources of a single server are shared between different clients, and if the server happens to face some technical problem or some fault, all the hostages can be affected.
Perhaps performance may be reduced in case of data traffic peaks. In addition, with the hosting you pay for a predefined amount of storage and processing, which may be of interest to companies with a predictable traffic flow.
If this is not your business model, and your traffic is unstable and can increase rapidly, such as for example in e-commerce when you do some promotion or some low in the dollar, you may be surprised by the response of this type Storage.
In these cases, you’ll need to adapt by buying additional space on the server to increase its storage and processing power, but if the traffic returns to normal, you can pay a price for a period that has not been used.
Hosting on cloud
We talk a lot here about cloud computing, which is nothing more than storing data and applications in the cloud, which offers a higher level of scalability than traditional hosting. Being a resource-based computing model, it does not require local servers to handle the data.
Cloud providers offer their virtual storage space on demand as needed by the customer. Instead of paying for a fixed amount of initial space with the hosting model, you pay for what you actually use, speaking of the public cloud model.
Using the cloud, the load balances on a multi-server cluster. The information and applications contained in these servers are mirrored throughout the cluster, which means that if an individual server crashes, there is no loss of information or downtime.
This redundancy increases the cloud’s elasticity making this service more resilient. With the cloud, it is very difficult for applications or data problems to affect performance.
Cloud Computing Features
Elasticity – When we talk about increased elasticity, one of the main benefits found in cloud services is the increase in data storage and processing capacity, as well as a simple structure reduction.
That is, the cloud is able to work according to the demand that your company needs, increasing or decreasing its storage capacity in an easy way.
Scalability – With a wide variety of service scopes and scopes, cloud solutions enable your business to be scalable, hiring services to the extent they are needed, without the need for large one-time investment, or running the risk of operating with one Their real needs.
Pay for use and reduce costs – As the framework used has all this scalability and elasticity of use, its cost follows the same premise, ie you only pay for what you actually consume and this positively impacts your business and operation.
With cloud computing it is possible to better allocate the investment according to what your company will actually use. Knowing how to manage the services, the reduction of costs with infrastructure is very noticeable.
Conclusion
When comparing  hosting and cloud computing, the cloud model approaching this comparison would be the Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), infrastructure as a service, which houses, executes, and maintains all the hardware the customer needs, and pays only for the resources An interesting example of comparing is with the way we pay for electricity in our homes, just by what we use.
One of the key differences between the models is that the cloud can be more rapidly scalable than traditional hosting. If an application or site receives more or less traffic, cloud servers scale up and down automatically, without the need to manually add or remove space on the server.
Speaking of contractual matters, hosting is easier than the company that offers the service to conform to the contractual terms that the client that is hiring needs. With public cloud providers, contracts are rigid and often follow the same pattern for any customer.
Whichever way your business chooses, you need to make sure that all your needs are met, whether in the traditional hosting model or with the cloud.
Amazon RDS for SQL Server – Native Backup / Restore Support for Amazon S3

Amazon RDS for SQL Server – Native Backup / Restore Support for Amazon S3

Regular readers of my articles know that I am a big fan of the Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS) . As a managed database service, it takes care of the more routine aspects of configuration, operation, and scalability of a relational database.
We’ve released support for SQL Server in 2012. Continuing our effort to add features that included support for SSL , major version updates , transparent data encryption , enhanced surveillance and Multi-AZ , we’ve now added Backup / Restore support for Native Servers.
Native SQL Server backups include all database objects: tables, indexes, stored procedures, and triggers. These backups are commonly used to migrate databases between different instances of SQL Server running in-place or in the cloud. They can be used for data ingestion, fault recovery, and so on. Native backups also simplify the process of importing data and schemas from local instances of SQL Server, and make it easier to understand and use with SQL Server DBAs.

Support for Native Backup / Restore

You can now make SQL Server database backups native to your RDS instances and store them in an Amazon S3 bucket. These backups can be restored to a local copy of SQL Server or to another instance of SQL Server from RDS. You can also copy the backups from your local databases to S3, and then restore them to an RDS SQL Server instance. Native Backup / Restore for SQL Server with Amazon S3 also supports backup encryption using AWS Key Management Service (KMS) in all editions of SQL Server. Storing and transferring backups in and out of AWS through S3 provides another option for disaster recovery.
You can enable this feature by adding the SQL_SERVER_BACKUP_RESTORE option to an option group and associating the option group with your SQL Server RDS instance. This option must also be configured with your S3 bucket information and can include a KMS key to encrypt the backups.
Start by finding the desired option group:
Then add the SQL_SERVER_BACKUP_RESTORE option, specify (or create) an IAM function to allow RDS to access S3, point to a bucket, and (if you want to) specify and configure encryption:
  • Rds_backup_database  – Backs up a single database to an S3 bucket.
  • Rds_restore_database – Restores a single S3 database.
  • Rds_task_status  – Runs the backup and restores tasks.
  • Rds_cancel_task  – Cancels a running backup or restore job.

Already available
SQL Server Native Backup / Restore is now available in the Eastern United States (Northern Virginia), Western (Oregon), Europe (Ireland), Europe (Frankfurt), Asia Pacific (Sydney), Asia Pacific ), Asia-Pacific (Singapore), Asia-Pacific (Mumbai), and South America (Brazil). There are no additional costs to use this feature with Amazon RDS for SQL Server, but usage of Amazon S3 storage will be charged at regular rates.

Microsoft announces preview of SQL Server 2017

Microsoft announced yesterday the next version of SQL Server, called SQL Server 2017, in the Microsoft Data Amp event. The first preview of SQL Server 2017 was also released as Community Technical Preview (CTP) 2.0 and is available for Linux and Windows.
The CTP 2.0 Preview comes with several new capabilities that will help developers bring more innovation to their projects, even when they’re working on Linux devices.
In its official blog , Microsoft said, “In this preview, we added a number of new features, including the ability to perform advanced analysis using Python in a highly scalable and parallel way, the ability to store and analyze graphics data and other capabilities that the Help manage SQL Server for high performance and uptime, including the Adaptive Query Processing family of intelligent database features and summarizable online indexing. ”
In addition, according to C # Corner , the company revealed that the new SQL Server 2017 achieved the world record in the TCP-H 1TB data warehousing workload when run on the Red Hat Enterprise Linux and HPE Prolliant server hardware. With this revelation, the company simply described the high-performance feature of SQL Server 2017 and called SQL Server “the best database for its mission-critical application and data warehouse workloads.”
Preview is available  for users to experiment with in a development and testing environment of their choice. You can get a detailed overview of what’s new in SQL Server 2017 at this linkor read the release notes.

Islamic State assumes responsibility for attacking Christians in Egypt

Gunmen invaded the vehicle and killed at least 29 people, according to the country’s authorities.

The Islamic State (EI) said on Saturday that a team of armed men from the terrorist group carried out the attack on a bus full of Coptic Christian pilgrims on Friday, which Egyptian officials said had killed 29 people.
The Amaq , the media arm of EI, said a team of “security” of gunmen from the terrorist group attacked the bus specifically because of his Coptic occupants, according to the SITE Intel Group, which monitors extremist activity online.
The attack prompted Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al Sisi to launch air strikes on areas that the Egyptian military said were militant training camps in Derna, eastern Libya.
Sisi said the armed men trained and planned the attack on the Libyan camps, but provided no evidence of the claim. The Islamic State has not registered in Derna since the end of 2015.

Trump defends sharing of sensitive data with Russia

The president, however, did not deny that he has shared confidential information with representatives of the country of Vladimir Putin

The president of the United States , Donald Trump , defended on the morning of Tuesday the decision to share sensitive information with Russia after revealing  report in the newspaper Washington Post . Via Twitter, the Republican confirmed that he shared facts with the country’s authorities at a public meeting last week.
“As president I wanted to share with Russia (in an open meeting at the White House) facts about terrorism and air safety, which I have the absolute right to do. In addition to the humanitarian reasons, I want Russia to increase its fight against the Islamic State and terrorism, “the president wrote on the social network
On Monday, two US officials told the Post that Trump revealed top secret information about EI terrorist plans to Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and Washington’s ambassador to Washington, Sergey Kislyak, when he received them in Washington . According to the publication, the data was obtained with an “important ally” and the president would have even told how he had access to the revelations. Sources of intelligence, who have confirmed what happened to CNN, said the mogul did not tell the Russians who was his source, but there is concern that Moscow will find out more about the case on its own.
On Monday night, Trump’s national security adviser,  HR McMaster, said that “at no time sources of intelligence or methods were discussed” with the Russians and that the Republican “did not open military operations that were not public knowledge.” In the tweets of the head of state, however, he does not comment on whether the information was confidential and only defends his right to share what he knows – which, in fact, he has the authority to do.
The Russian Foreign Ministry, in turn, denied that Trump released secret information through Interfax news agency on Tuesday. Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova called the reports “more of a lie.”
